CRN.com recently published an article by Sean Walsh, GM AppSense ANZ. The article details how a ‘One-size -fits-all virtual desktop is a sure-fire recipe for disaster’ and that ‘There’s nothing like your own desktop’.
Sean discusses the need for personalization and bespoke desktop configuration, and that without it, locked down or standardized desktops will not serve the needs of todays users, and will ultimately, prevent the adoption of desktop virtualization is not managed correctly.

On February 22nd 2010, VMware acquired certain assets of RTO Software, namely their Virtual Profiles technology as well PinPoint and Discover products. The organization goes on to mention that the R and D efforts of RTO will now be merged into those of VMware.
A PDF document on the VMware website gives answers to various questions such as those around support, the future of the product and how the software will be used.

As technologies continue to evolve, so does the terminology we use to refer to and describe them. As many of us have experienced, terminology can be a minefield, with many discussions based on a difference of opinion on terms, rather than on what the term actually means. For example, ‘VDI’ was first coined to describe an instance of a virtual desktop session running on a server. However most people today use VDI in reference to a broader set of desktop delivery mechanisms; encompassing SBC, streamed apps, provisioned OS, client hosted desktops etc.
