VDI's Top 5 Prerequisites...okay maybe 4 - Looking for Feedback Please!
What do you need to do before you deploy a desktop virtualizaiton solution?

Having had the opportunity to architect a few VDI, Desktop Virtualization, Alternative Desktop, or whatever you choose to call it, solutions over the last few years I thought I would put together a list of the top things that need to be done in order to be successful with a VDI rollout. Note, I am assuming that business justification and need has already been established so no comments about whether or not anyone actually needs or should deploy a desktop virtualization solution.

The Marketing (and Industry) of VDI
VDI what is the definition? Citrix? VMware? Since customers are doing POC's and buying basically everything is VDI now. XenApp yep VDI.. XenDesktop yep VDI... View VDI... Microsoft RDS....Leostream.... VDI.... ETC!!! Marketing at it's best. My second choice for the title would have been "VDI: an IT stimulus package"

Our Virtualization Community (VMware Citrix Microsoft) & Professionals Behavior
I know I might not be the best person to talk on this subject as it relates to the title but I always try to tell it how I see it, or at the very least be fair. But lately I am seeing plagiarism move past blogs and articles in our industry to CPA websites, Twitter and other mediums. Enough think for your self or give credit to the person who thought it!

Citrix/Vmware - How do you name your virtual machines?
I am curious what naming schemes do you use to name your virtual machines?

The decision not to virtualize... or anything else for that matter.
How the economy is driving IT decisions in the hardest hit industries. Here is one example, of many I’m sure. I would love to hear some success stories of companies that were/are truly on the ragged edge of being no longer... but leveraged technology and made it through a truly tough time.

vBIOS Why not provide a small 32-Bit environment with tools on the vmdk or vdisk
A conversation about why VMware, XenServer, and the rest of the space simply emulate a BIOS when the advantages the opensource community is starting to produce at the BIOS level are clear. OpenFirmware & EFI was a step in the right direction, but did not go far enough.

Virtually Debating Desktop Virtualization…
There were a couple of articles floating around recently which sparked various discussions around VDI with some people saying it was relevant and some saying it wasn’t. There were also a few hints at having an open public debate with the industry leaders about VDI and venues such as BriForum were suggested.

Here is my suggestion –

Let’s have a debate about Desktop Virtualization, Virtually?

VDI... WTF or FTW?
So I really enjoyed Eric's "VDI is stupid" post the other day, though perhaps more for the style over substance. If I may be so bold I would like to add my meager two cents (Canadian no less) to the VDI discussion.

Is VDI Stupid?
VDI is not stupid. Recently, Eric S. Perkins on his blog proclaimed that VDI is Stupid. Well, actually, the way our competitors have been treating VDI is problematic; which might have led to Eric's assertion that VDI is stupid. So, I want to take this opportunity to go over some of his concerns. In this Citrix blog, Victor Thu responds to Eric Perkins...

Virtualization I get it (I even love it) but VDI....
With the current state of our server operating systems virtualization is critical. No question. VDI on the other hand is a genius marketing product that originated from VMware to gain market share from Citrix and Microsoft, and you know what? They did quite successfully in an industry Citrix was deeply entrenched in VMware made rapid inroads to Citrix's client base by bundling the product. Citrix had to dump a ton of cash into developing a VDI solution just to handle the buzz! Kudos to VMware on this.

Merged utility to launch "unkillable" processes and to repurpose windows clients
This is an update to two previous utilities that have now been merged - "Launching an unkillable process" and "Replacement shell for repurposing a Windows client" - and also adds a few new features. Note that it also allows launching of console based programs without them showing a window at all.

Citrix XenDesktop 4 – Now Includes XenApp.
Today Citrix announced the availability of XenDesktop Version 4, to be released in November 09. This is a significant announcement as it incorporates the combining of XenDesktop and XenApp into one (marketed) product – XenDesktop 4. Effectively, XenDesktop 4 is now the Citrix virtual desktop solution for all user types (including task workers on TS) with XenApp providing the application / TS side.

One Button Restore - Hyper-V / Exchange / SQL (Dell Equallogic ISCSI SAN)
Have you ever wanted to cut down the amount of time for Backups and Restores in your environment. Well I have just become a huge fan of Dell Equallogic technology. With their Host Integration Kit (HIT) you can integrate with VSS Writers for SQL / Exchange / Hyper-V and more. I have uploaded a video that demostrates just how easy this is. Let me know how you like it -- It is without audio but that can be easily added later.
